A day after the death of a youth after an attempt at sacrilege at a darbar sahib last evening, a man was lynched by the villagers of Nizampur village at Kapurthala on Sunday after he allegedly caused disrespect to the local Nishan Sahib at the local village gurdwara.

Police have registered a case under IPC section 295A for deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings and said they would also probe the killing. The incident came a day after an unidentified youth was beaten to death at Golden Temple in Amritsar after being accused of a sacrilege attempt.

The man trespassed into a gurudwara around 4 am. He was caught by a sewadar, who did a Facebook live accusing the man of coming to the gurudwara with an aim of disrespecting the Guru Granth Sahib.

Soon, a crowd of over 200 people reportedly gathered at the spot, beating the man to pulp. It has been reported that the police had reached the spot in time and were requesting the sewadars to hand over the man to them, but the crowd lynched him.

On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and urged the Sikh groups to hand over the accused. As police tried to control the mob, a clash erupted and it was during this time that the protesters brutally thrashed the man, the SSP said.

The man was rushed in a critically injured condition to the local civil hospital where doctors declared him “brought dead”. Meanwhile, three police personnel, including the station house officer of Shubanpur police station, were injured in the clash, police said.
