A 20-year-old girl was found dead in the Vasant Nagar area of Umarkhed on Friday. Ganga was found strangled in the room of a district riot police officer. The investigation has now revealed that she committed suicide because she was sexually assaulted by a police officer. A police officer has been arrested by the Umarkhed police on charges of rape and abetment to suicide.
Umarkhed police arrested a police officer Vijay Hatkar (age 42) on the night of December 25 in this case. He is now in police custody till January 2 after being produced in court.
Vijay Hatkar lured Ganga for a job in the police force and admitted her to a private police training academy. After that, he called her to his place in the lure of marriage and started harassing her, and forcefully kept her in his house. When Ganga did not return home, her family members filed a complaint with the police. The police then found her body hanging at Vijay’s rented room in Vasant Nagar. Ganga’s father Sanjay Korde, has lodged a complaint against the accused with the police.
The result has been concluded after the complaint and the medical examination of the body, resulting in registering a case against Vijay Hatkar by the Umarkhed police under various sections like torture and abetment to suicide. He has been produced in court and has been remanded to police custody for seven days. The accused was a police officer in the District Riot Control Squad and was posted in Umarkhed. Thanedar Amol Malve revealed that Vijay was on leave from December 6.
