While Uttarakhand is all set to walk into assembly elections of 2022, its Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami promised its residents that their party will implement the Uniform Civil Code if they’re elected in power once again.
He said, “The new BJP government will form a committee to prepare a draft of the Civil Code in the state. This UCC will provide for the same laws regarding marriage, divorce, land-property and inheritance for all people, irrespective of their faith.”
Along with his wife Geeta Dhami and mother Bishna Devi, Pushkar Dhami went to cast his vote at Khatima’s Nagla Terai village. He soon engaged in conversation with India Today and said that UCC is extremely important to implement equality. Bishna Devi said, “I have voted and blessed my son.”
He added, “Uniform Civil Code is very important for Uttarakhand. The people of Uttarakhand will not forgive the Congress for its comments about the Muslim university.”
What is UCC?
The UCC or the Uniform Civil Code is the implantation of one law for everyone in India, which would be applicable to all the religious communities of India in matters such as adoption, marriage, divorce etc.
The issue has been gaining momentum in the country and it has been one of the main election manifestos for the Bharatiya Janata Party. It was the first party to promise UCC implementation if it comes to power.
This law was thought to be necessary as personal laws of various communities are governed by their religious scriptures which means that each citizen and their civil matters are treated differently before the law. Many people believe that this is against the very heart of the constitution.
Meanwhile, Rajnath Singh has warned Congress about Pushkar Dhami’s victory in the Uttarakhand elections. Quoting the famous dialogue of the film Pushpa, he said, “Congress thinks that Pushkar is a flower. I want to tell them that our Pushkar is a flower as well as fire. Our Pushkar will never bow, nor will he ever stop.”
