The Supreme Court has upheld the interim stay imposed by the High Court on Gujarat government’s law prohibiting marriage for the purpose of religious conversion.
The Supreme Court issued a notice asking the Gujarat government to file a reply on the matter within six weeks.
To this, the Gujarat government said that it would not be appropriate to file a reply in such a short time and hear the matter.
After hearing the state government’s stand, the court said that we will hear the matter after six weeks.
The Gujarat government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on Gujarat High Court’s order. It said the Gujarat Religious Freedom (Amendment) Act, 2021 will not be applicable to inter-religious marriages.
A marriage that has been done without force, greed or fraud, will not come under the law, it added.
