Shinzo Abe, who resigned as prime minister of Japan in 2020, was shot while delivering a speech in Nara and was confirmed dead at the hospital.

Former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe reportedly suffered cardiac arrest after being shot at a campaign address in western Japan on Friday, according to NHK public television. Abe, sustained a gunshot wound to the neck, according to officials. He was announced at the hospital.

The broadcaster released footage of Mr Abe dropping out in the street and numerous security personnel rushing to help him. When he collapsed, Mr Abe was clutching his chest and his shirt was soaked in blood. Mr Abe, according to NHK, was taken immediately to a hospital.

A gunshot was heard when Mr Abe, 67, was speaking during a campaign stop in Nara ahead of Sunday’s vote for the upper chamber of parliament. On suspicion of attempted murder, police have arrested a male suspect at the scene, according to NHK.

Abe was the longest-serving Japanese Prime Minister in history. He stepped down as leader in 2020, citing health reasons.

After Abe’s demise was reported, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida strongly condemned the shooting, and both Japanese citizens and global leaders expressed horror at the horrific violence in a nation where civil unrest is uncommon and where guns are highly restricted.

Kishida struggled to control his emotions as he added, “This attack is an act of savagery that happened during the elections – the very cornerstone of our democracy – and is totally inexcusable.”
