Four British tourists die in Italy lake Maggiore Boat Capsize

Four people, all British tourists on their way to a birthday party, are missing after a boat they were on overturned in Italy.

Lake Maggiore, located on the southern side of the Alps, is a renowned tourist destination shared by Italy and Switzerland.The region has experienced poor weather over the past day, and Italy’s meteorological service has issued warnings for thunderstorms.At least three people have perished after a boat transporting more than 20 people, including tourists, sank on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy due to high winds.The Sunday storm system that included the whirlwind that damaged the 52-foot-long (16-meter-long) boat and created delays at Malpensa airport also affected Lombardy.

There were reportedly 25 people on board celebrating a birthday when a storm rolled in over the lake and strengthened into a “small hurricane,” according to Italian media reports. Soon later, the boat flipped over and sank down.Another boat reportedly raised the alarm after spotting people in the water, as reported by La Repubblica.After a passenger on another boat sounded the alarm, seven ambulances, specialised firefighters, divers, the coast guard, and an air ambulance rushed to the scene.

Meanwhile, on the lake, heavy rain and darkness hampered the search efforts. A man’s lifeless corpse was spotted in the water by the “Drago 150” helicopter. A firefighter dove in and recovered the body of the victim. Late in the evening, his identity is still unknown because he was not carrying his identification documents, but he appears to be a 53-year-old foreigner. Divers discovered the body of the second victim in the evening. He was sixteen metres below the surface in the boat’s wreckage.

Two people were considered to be in “moderately critical” condition and were airlifted to the hospital; three others were transferred to the hospital for less serious injuries; and 15 others were treated at the scene.
