Mukesh Ambani, CEO of Reliance, joins the COP28 panel’s advisory council on climate change

Ambani is one of the 31 worldwide experts chosen to the panel and is leading Reliance’s transition towards renewable energy and diversifying away from its conventional crude oil refining and petrochemicals businesses

The COP28 UAE Advisory Committee brings together thinking leaders with extensive knowledge of climate issues from nations on six different continents.

The 31 members of the Committee, of which 65% are from the Global South, “represent policy, industry, energy, finance, civil society, youth, and humanitarian action” and “will provide guidance and counsel to the COP Presidency in the lead-up to COP28 and beyond,” according to COP28 on its website, the UAE presidency.

In the areas of adaptation, mitigation, finance, loss and damage, food and agriculture, and nature-based solutions, the panel will encourage collaborative and transformative action.

Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, minister of industry and advanced technologies and special envoy for climate change for the UAE, was named COP28 president-designate by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat in January. CEO of BlackRock Larry Fink, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Siemens Joe Kaeser, President of Crescent Petroleum Badr Jafar, Former CEO of BP Bob Dudley, and Fu Chengyu of China Petrochemical Corporation make up the board

Sunita Narain, an environmental activist, is the only other member of the panel who is from India

The committee also includes Laurent Fabius, a former French prime minister and COP21 president, Olafur Grimsson, a former president of Iceland, Sir John Rose, the director of the MIT Computer Science and AI Lab, Daniela Rus, and Hilda Heine, a former president of the Republic of the Marshall Islands

The 2023 UN Climate Change Conference will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 30 to December 12

It will include the 59th meetings of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 59) and the 59th meetings of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 59). It will also include the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28), the fifth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 5), the 18th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol

The COP27 Egyptian presidency and the incoming COP28 presidency are holding informal consultations to involve governments at the ministerial, head-of-delegation, and technical levels in order to lay the groundwork for a successful COP28 that promotes ambitious climate action and facilitates implementation, including the support associated with it.
