In an effort to regain control of Chhattisgarh, the BJP on Thursday nominated candidates for 21 seats. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel’s seat in Patan, in Durg district, was represented by Lok Sabha MP Vijay Baghel.

All 21 of these seats were lost by the BJP, and all of the losers from the 2018 state elections have been replaced. The majority of fresh candidates are zilla panchayat members or district-level BJP leaders.

Bishamber Yadav, Mumbai Uncensored, 21 August, 2023:

For the upcoming state elections, the Congress has yet to nominate any candidates.

On a BJP ticket, 63-year-old Vijay Baghel defeated 63-year-old Bhupesh Baghel in the 2008 Assembly elections. Vijay’s uncle Bhupesh Baghel won reelection in 2018 by defeating Motilal Sahu of the BJP.

Since 1993, Vijay Baghel has only defeated Bhupesh Baghel once as he has won five times from Patan. In 2003 and 2013, he twice bested Vijay Baghel.

Vijay Baghel, a former congressman, is in charge of the BJP’s manifesto committee in the state.

Senior tribal leader Ram Vichar Netam, 62, a former Rajya Sabha MP and MLA from the Ramanujganj constituency in the Balrampur-Ramanujganj district, was chosen by the BJP as one of the most important figures. In 2013, he was defeated by Congressman Brihaspat Singh. In 2018, Singh defeated Ramkishun Singh of the BJP.

Mahesh Sahu, a former executive district president of the Sahu community in Raigarh, was chosen by the party as the BJP district secretary from Kharsia, where Umesh Patel, the state’s education minister, currently sits. Sahu will be running in his first election.

Devlal Thakur, the head of the zilla panchayat in the Balod district, was chosen by the party to represent the Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the Dondi Lohara constituency. Anila Bhendia, a minister in the Baghel administration, represented the Congress and won the seat in 2018. If the ruling party nominates him again for the seat, Congress MLA Shishupal Shori, a retired IAS officer, could run against Asharam Netam, the head of the BJP’s ST unit in Kanker district.

The party chose Sarla Kosaria from Saraipali, a seat designated for Scheduled Castes (SC), who is the vice-president of the state unit and oversees the women’s wing in Chhattisgarh. Kismat Nand of Congress won the seat in 2018. Maniram Kashyap will represent the BJP in Bastar, where Lakeshwar Baghel of the Congress won the election in 2018.
