After a video of two women slipping into an open drain during heavy rain circulated on social media, the civic body in Mumbai has asked staff to inspect all manholes in the city, an official said on Thursday.

The decision was issued by municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal after CCTV footage of two women falling into an open manhole gained traction on social media, according to a statement released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

The CCTV footage is reported to be from Village Road in Bhandup’s eastern suburbs, where two women were believed to have fallen into a drain during heavy rains on Wednesday.

According to the city body’s statement, a new lid has been installed on the open manhole.

The BMC also claimed that as part of its pre-monsoon works, it inspects all manholes and replaces their lids if necessary. However, following Wednesday’s heavy rain, the organisation is inspecting all manholes once more.
