In a shocking incident, a 17-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu has succumbed to her injuries ten
days after she attempted to commit suicide. Before attempting suicide, she recorded a
video saying she was being tortured by the warden of her hostel because she didn’t agree to
convert to Christianity.
M Lavanya was a 12 th -grade student at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Thirukattupali
in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. After undergoing the torture of conversion for two years, she
committed suicide on January 20, three days after making the video and explaining her
reason.
Recently, Lavanya’s mother has opened up in front of the media asking the government to
put the responsible people behind bars. The deceased girl’s mother opened up about the
torture her daughter suffered by authorities of the missionary school to convert to
Christianity.
When asked if the conversion angle is false as maintained by the police, the mother angrily
said, “Do you want to say what she said in her dying declaration is false”?
“We want justice”, she kept on saying. “She was asked to wash bathrooms and do other
chores and was tortured”, she said. She identified the wardens responsible for her death,
Sahay Mary and Rocklyn Mary.
She revealed that the school continuously said to them “If she becomes like us she will get
the respect and stature she deserves”. She even recalled how the school asked her to
convert her daughter to Christianity. Ahe also added that she fought for the same matter
with the warden. She said that the school had threatened them to spread rumours about
her character if she ever complained about these to anyone.
Lavanya wanted to apply for a transfer certificate but the school was shut down due to
COVID. “We were waiting for the school to reopen and give us the TC so that we could apply
to some other school”, she said. But the school denied it.
