On the day of 30 January 1948, Nathuram Godse walked up to Gandhiji in the Birla House during the evening prayers, shot him dead and proudly surrendered. From that year onwards, we celebrate the day as Martyrs’ Day. On the other hand, the Hindu Mahasabha paid tribute to Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte for assassinating him by observing it as “Godse-Apte Smriti Diwas”.

The organisation gave “Godse-Apte Bharat Ratna” to Kalicharan Maharaj who was jailed last year for making disrespectful remarks against Gandhiji in Chattisgarh’s Raipur during a Dharma Sansad.

The organisation believes that Gandhiji was responsible for India’s partition and the horror of mass killings and revolts that followed. Jaiveer Bharadwaj, the national vice president of Hindu Mahasabha said that they together performed Bharat Mata aarti aiming to make Bhaarat Akhand once again by integrating India and Pakistan. He added that they observe this day as Godse-Apte Smriti Diwas as a way of expressing their anger over the duo’s arrest on 30 January 1948.

Mr Bharadwaj also added that since Kalicharan Maharaj is serving his time in jail, the award was received on his behalf by Pramod Lohpatre.

After attending the program that was held in Gwalior’s Daulatganj area, Mr Bharadwaj talked to the reporters about the huge contribution made by the Hindu Mahasabha in the freedom struggle. He said, “People should not be misled into believing that India got independence due to charkha”, making reference to the spinning wheel popularised by Gandhiji.
