Nowadays young generation is widely considered the core in the development of every country. The college experience is valuable for people from all walks of life. At college, one is able to learn more about themselves, the world, and how to converse with those different from themselves. There is great emphasises on the need for a multi dimensional approach in our curriculums in this modern era.
The students of HR college of Commerce and Economics, located at Churchgate [BMS program] recently did a major social service activity to serve the underprivileged and needy sections of society in Mumbai by organising a multi-dimensional collection drive called AYESHA to serve the vulnerable and underprivileged section of society. This type of initiative prepares students to grow up as active, responsible, and reflective members of society.
This gives the students a significant experience in skills that serve them when they enter the real, corporate world as well. The students started by collecting various forms of donations such as toys, clothes, stationary, blankets and pillows, along with monetary donations within the college campus. The collection drive collected over Rs. 55,000/- via monetary donations, and various other items in kind. They develop communication skills and how to interact with authority figures. School life is not all about academics, games, friends and fun. In fact it is also about learning to interact with other people, being aware of the social inequities and learning to amend the deformities present in our society.
These students have shown us that you are never too young or immature to start making a difference in the community and translating the social issues. The proceedings from the monetary donations were used to serve food to more than 250 people at the TATA Memorial Hospital for Cancer Patients and KEM Hospital, as well as to buy 300 kilos of food grains for labourers in Naigaon who don’t have regular access to food. In addition to this, clothes were also gifted to the residents of All Saints Home, Mazgaon and of Shanti Daan, Borivali. Students spent time with the residents of All Saints Home and performed various interactive activities as well. The residual income from these donations will be donated to the education fund for underprivileged children to support their education.
Mudit Makhija, Student chairperson of the B.M.S Committee of H.R. College said, ‘The smile on the underprivileged is my true wealth. As the chairperson I look forward towards getting sheer happiness and joy in the easiest and simplest way possible. Every single person went out of their way to donate whatever they could with immense pride. I can say that we made a difference in ones life which will keep us going all year round.’’
Our world is desperately waiting for a change. If everyone in this world undertakes at least one social responsibility, then the world will definitely be a better place to live in. The students of H.R. College are an example for all young people showing us how little but effective efforts can have genuine influence on the world around us.
