Australia’s biggest drug bust: $1 billion of cocaine seized

The Australian Police claims to have made the biggest ever drug bust after seizing cocaine with a street value of nearly $1 billion, which is half of Australia’s estimated annual consumption.

The Australian police took the lead after U.S. authorities reportedly intercepted drugs trying to make its way to Western Australia, off the coast of Ecuador in November 2022.

The joint operation of Australia and U.S. led to arrests of 12 suspects linked to a Mexican cartel.

The transnational and organized crime Squad with other officials of Australia followed the delivery for months. They assisted to reconstruct identical packages and dropped 1.2 ton of those drugs into the ocean, 40 miles off the coast. Finally, they substituted the cargo with fake drugs at the last moment.

Investigators substituted the illicit cargo with plaster of paris (a fine white powder) and dropped the shipment into the Indian Ocean, west of Perth. They then monitored by drones and helicopters. Surveillances showed that one vessel towing another vessel after it appeared on the beach. A criminal syndicate was found by Police having alleged links to a Mexican cartel that used 2 boats to find and retrieve the consignments.

Two men were arrested and other gang members were detained at a harbor in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The police also stopped a vehicle on a highway at a large distance away where a large cash amount was found. This time Australian official’s efforts prevented Australia from becoming a lucrative illegal drug trafficking destination.
