The Kashimira police have filed charges against Rajesh Shyamlal Chavhan for allegedly stealing electricity valued at over Rs 5.48 lakh. This action came after Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML)’s vigilance department received a tip about the illegal activity.
During inspections, it was revealed that Chavhan, residing in the Penkarpada area of Kashimira, had unlawfully consumed 26,578 units of electricity from December 2021 to July 2024. Chavhan is reportedly a close relative of a former BJP corporator from the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC).
Chavhan has been charged under section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003 at the Kashimira police station as of Tuesday. Investigations are ongoing. Despite having a legal connection, Chavhan was found to be illicitly tapping electricity.
Electricity theft is a non-bailable offense that can lead to significant fines, imprisonment for up to three years, or both upon conviction. This case highlights the authorities’ efforts to combat power theft and enforce legal compliance.
