Samir Mehta, a second-generation restaurateur, began his journey with Sonali Restaurant at just 15 years old. Now 41, he has spent over two decades modernizing and expanding the business, which was originally established by his father in 1968. Sonali Restaurant holds the distinction of being the first to introduce pav bhaji to the Saurashtra region, a pioneering move that laid the foundation for its lasting impact. In 2023, Sonali Restaurant was also recognized by BBC News as one of the oldest and finest restaurant brands in Rajkot.
From the outset, Samir faced the challenge of managing a seasoned staff who had been with the business since its inception. It took him five years to fully take control of operations, during which time he learned the intricacies of running a successful restaurant. His efforts have focused on preserving the restaurant’s legacy while adapting to modern tastes.
One of Samir’s most significant contributions came in 2014 when the family decided to sell the business. He opposed the decision, believing in its potential for growth. Today, the business boasts three outlets within the city, spanning a total of 8,000 sq. ft. of carpet area and accommodating more than 400 customers at a time.
Samir has always believed in blending tradition with innovation. In 2016, he launched a fine-dining multi-cuisine restaurant under his own brand name, Global Platter, offering dishes from around the world, including Thai, Mexican, Italian, Indian, and Chinese cuisines. The restaurant has gained significant recognition and has even received an award from Gujarat Tourism for being the Best Multi-Cuisine Restaurant in Rajkot. It was also recently visited by the famous singer Amaal Malik during his concert in Rajkot.
Another highlight in the brand’s journey is Sonali Restaurant’s recognition as the winner of “Red FM ka Thappa” for Rajkot’s Best Pav Bhaji in 2016. This milestone was achieved due to Samir’s perseverance when the family considered winding up the business. One of Samir’s earlier contributions was extending the restaurant’s operating hours from a half-day schedule to full-day service, allowing Sonali Restaurant to cater to a broader customer base. Dr. Arundhati Joshi is a General Dentist specialising in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry and the founder of Baysmiles Dental Clinic at Kemps Corner, Mumbai. Her journey into dentistry was not exactly what she had originally imagined. She had always aspired to become a gynaecologist and even secured admission to an MBBS programme. However, her father had always envisioned her as a dentist, and eventually, dentistry became the profession in which she found her purpose.
Dr. Joshi completed her BDS from Government Dental College, Mumbai, and later earned an opportunity to pursue an MSc in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry at the University of Manchester. Unfortunately, just two days before the course began, health issues forced her to step back. Rather than allowing the setback to define her journey, she continued to pursue her interest in advanced dentistry. With the support of her mother, she successfully completed a fellowship in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry from UCL Eastman, London.
Her professional journey began at Naval Health Station and later took her across multiple private clinics and trusts throughout Mumbai. For nearly 12 years, she worked continuously, gaining experience, building her skills and earning the trust of patients. It was only after this extensive period of professional groundwork that she took the step towards establishing her own practice.
