On 25th February, the centre announced new intermediary guidelines and gave social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp 3 months to abide by the new rules.

While Facebook agreed to comply, Twitter has been in the news for disagreements with the Indian government. With everything going on, the news of Twitter officer stepping down has raised many questions. The new IT rules make it mandatory to have a grievance officer residing in India, which Twitter agreed to but  failed to follow through by appointing California based Jeremy Kessel as the new officer. While no official statement has been released by twitter yet, the company might have brought up trouble for itself by losing legal protection as an intermediary and may be held responsible for all content posted by it’s users on the platform.
