Kangana Ranaut, who is well known for often landing into trouble because of her controversial stands on various political topics, has commented on the Hijab controversy that has been going on in Karnataka.

Taking it on her Instagram handle, she shared a collage of women in her story. One photo was of some women sitting in a bikini while another was of women wearing a burqa. The photo was originally captioned by the author Anand Ranganathan, “Iran. 1973 and now. From bikini to burqa in fifty years flat. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” The author has always openly condemned religious dress codes in educational institutes.

Re-sharing the post, she wrote “If you want to show courage, show it by not wearing burqa in Afghanistan. Learn to break free, not cage yourself.”

The Karnataka government recently observed three days of holidays in educational institutions following violent clashes in many parts of the state.

For the uninitiated, the controversy started when a few students of Udupi Government Pre-University College turned up wearing a hijab and were asked to leave the classroom. It took pace when the students defied the school orders but the college administration did not flinch. The matter has now reached the Karnataka High Court.

In response, many students showed up wearing hijab. To counter this, students of the Hindu community showed up at various universities and colleges wearing saffron scarves. The issue started from one college but soon spread to many colleges and universities around the state.

This issue has encouraged debates and clashes all over the country. While many people argue about the rights of women, many are of the opinion that uniformity should be maintained in educational institutes without interference with religious norms.
