A recent analysis by US researchers from Rutgers University reports that “anti-Hindu disinformation” has significantly increased on social media and messaging services. Experts claim that the investigation indicated that hate speech directed at the Hindu community on social media has accelerated over the previous few years and has mostly gone unnoticed.

The Rutgers University study examines how white supremacist and 4chan genocidal Pepe memes about Hindus are widely disseminated within radical Islamist web networks on Telegram and other platforms.

Researchers from the Rutgers NC Lab used artificial intelligence to better understand how an encrypted and hidden linguistic pattern proliferated on social media.

Not all anti-Hindu tweets originate from Pakistan. Results showed state-sponsored information operations in Iran and other countries.

As per their analysis of million tweets, Iranian trolls spread anti-Hindu tropes to stir division As part of an influence operation to accuse Hindus of conducting genocide against minorities in India.

Along with high school students from the New Jersey Governors’ STEM Scholars programme, data was gathered and analysed. They provided them with instruction on open-source intelligence gathering, machine learning for identifying cyber-social dangers, and the types of anti-Hindu misinformation.

Notably, India requested that the UN recognise “Hinduphobia” and other crimes of religious prejudice against Buddhism and Sikhism in January 2022.

At a virtual meeting hosted by the Global Counter-Terrorism Centre (GCTC) in Delhi, India’s ambassador to the UN, TS Tirumurti, urged the international organisation to recognise threats against Jews, Sikhs, and Hindus.

“Emergence of contemporary forms of religiophobia, especially anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist and anti-Sikh phobias is a matter of serious concern and needs attention of the UN and all member states to address this threat,” Tirumurti had said.
